Shaped by Ice: Glacial Identities (a Climate Art Show)

This show explores stories about how our glacial regions are changing and how these changes deeply impact human and natural communities at many levels, from the loss of freshwater resources to ecosystem shifts.

Glacier loss is a visible sign of climate change. Our goal is to increase awareness, foster curiosity, and inspire personal connections between people and glaciers.

The group exhibition is curated by Jill Pelto, featuring the following artists:

Julia Ditto
Claire Giordano
Jason Hummel
Shari Macy
Rose McAdoo

Artist’s Statement

I believe that the work of artists often functions as the equivalent of a town crier, calling out news to the public. Traditionally, the crier's messages are of civic or community importance. The Town and Crier Exhibition presents a range of environmental and social issues, actions that inform and connect indicator, mitigator and storyteller.

In the Slip exhibition, presented are a variety of community and personal projects that have served as social and environmental sentinels, suggesting that art can be both pragmatic and poetic. These projects include a 30-year street laboratory, public works, and design team projects that range from temporary interventions, site laboratories, collaborative civic projects and public commissions.

Art as indicator and/or mitigator suggests an approach that fosters adaptive creative strategies in the face of future extinction. One project is the streetscape along First Avenue in Belltown. This was my neighborhood for thirteen years. Started as a community project in 1979, and intended as a way to create basic street needs such as seating and shade trees, the project evolved to include (for a short time) a composting commode located over a tree pit.

A more recent project, “Migration Stage," was a nine-year project on the waterfront, south of the ferry terminal. The installation references the global use a Dolos as concrete shoreline armor, now a universal form indicating rising sea levels. An anthropomorphic version of fourteen Dolosse (plural for Dolos) has been placed to create a socially engaging gathering place along the Seattle Seawall Promenade.  As the Salish Sea rises Concrete sculptures could eventually submerge or became marine habitat or be repurposed.  This is a decision left to future staging.

Most all the projects in the exhibition share the potential of being dynamic constructs, intended to wear, purge or merge with the advent of the Anthropocene.

Sea change ringing, hear ye, hear ye, see ye.  The recent Federal abandonment of climate change abatement suggests an   inability to perceive of, and equitably address the upheavals of the Anthropocene.

Democracy trumps authoritarianism myopic thinking.

lol…the digital persona lives in a duality, both permeable and shrouded in its public nature.

“Seen” requires the viewer to challenge parasocial speculation through physical click-training and the earnest telling of secrets. lol…what would surface if we removed the ephemera of 10-second intervals for 24 hours?

And we just live our lives, business as usual. Consumers who are consumed. People passing one another everyday, communities crumble into individualism. We are living in a mundane dystopia. Mundane Dystopia seeks to highlight the many different dystopian realities we are living in and highlighting the absurdity of what we as society have allowed to become normal.

(what you) bring to the table

Coming September 13 - October 5 to Slip Gallery is a group show which investigates what the artists and their community bring to the table, figuratively and literally. Artists across mediums and disciplines will display food-themed artworks that explore topics like basic needs, relationships, memories, value, and expectations. Through mediums like glass, video, collage, painting, and thread, as well as several collaborative and interactive works, the artists create an atmosphere that mimics the exchange of meals and the community that surrounds it. Curated by Alaina Stocker.

Join us for the following events during this exhibit:

Still-life tableau co-create evening, September 28th from 6-9pm

Join us for a co-create art event where the artists will gather a table full of objects and foodstuff and invite people to make art out of it all together in the gallery space. You will be encouraged to draw or paint in observation, utilize the objects themselves in sculpture, take photos, or anything else that provides inspiration.

Closing party potluck, October 5th from 6-9pm

Join us for a classic potluck, with the artists feeding their community with creative interpretations of shared food. RSVP to reserve your spot. We will check names at the door.

The Spaces Between, by Ian Shearer

The Spaces Between, by Ian Shearer

The Spaces Between features new work and some old favorites by Ian Shearer. Exploring liminal spaces and contemplating what lies in the in-between. Examining what lives in limbo and the juxtaposition of the possibilities and inertia that exist there.

Within many of the works braille text merges with paint. Creating a separate experience available only to those that can read it. These bits of stories influence the direction of the paintings, but remain hidden from viewer's eyes. Existing in the "in-between" they question who exactly is disabled and who is not.

Burl Norville | Solo Exhibition

Visit during gallery hours: Thursday through Saturday from 1-6pm.

Words from Burl Norville: “I prefer to be a bit vague in my art, to use the absurdity of combined elements and themes to inspire a range of interpretations. When a viewer brings a new interpretation, especially if it's something I never thought about when creating the art, it makes me happy because it gives a piece more life. It becomes a conversation with the viewer instead of a monologue by the artist, and I prefer to have a chat.”

“It seems, in the last few years at least, I often pull inspiration from the feelings and experiences of my youth, from the formative years when you are fumbling along trying to create a decent version of yourself with the big bad wolf that is the world lurking.”

Rumble in the Jungle

Solo Exhibition by Christopher Coleman, a Seattle-based painter inspired by his daily interactions throughout the city. He has always had a passion for art and music. It wasn’t until 2015, after deciding to leave a career in music, that he started focusing more on painting.

He chooses not to identify with one style over another but instead pursues that personal connection between you and his pieces. It is his hope that you see yourself in his work and that themes such as daily life, icons, and self-love found throughout his paintings create space for you to connect to the world at large in a meaningful way.
